LinkedIn is the largest professional social media platform in the world. This is especially important in a day and age where people no longer stay with the same company and retire after 30 years. Instead, people search for more fulfillment and compensation through their profession, which leads many to change employment every 5 to 7 years.

When you first set up your LinkedIn account, you were required to enter an email address that is associated with your account and used as your log-in user name.

When first building a profile on LinkedIn, especially if you have finally landed your dream job, you may feel tempted to build your LinkedIn profile with your current employers contact information (company phone, company email, etc.). However, job markets and the economy can change as quickly as your employment status. If that happens, you will need your LinkedIn profile more than ever to help establish new connections with recruiters who are using this social media platform more and more to locate and research potential hires.

While there is certainly nothing wrong with listing your employer’s email on your account if you want, it is strongly suggested that this is not the account you use as your primary email address. For that matter, for security purposes, you should always seek to have a minimum of two separate email addresses associated with your profile – on ANY social media platform.

To effectively use LinkedIn, be sure to build your profile with longevity in mind, and build it around you, not your employer. This means you need to be sure to include at least one email address that is not controlled by your employer so you can still maintain access to your LinkedIn profile should you happen to realize you need to move on post haste.

Should anything happen to your primary email account, you need to have a way to access your account. This is a simple setting to adjust and can be done from a browser or from your mobile app.

Here are some screenshots and instructions to add a new email address to your profile:

1. Click the “Me” icon (your profile picture) in the Menu/Navigation Bar (Top Right).

2. Click Settings & Privacy in the drop down menu.

3. Click Email addresses.

4. Look on the left side of the page for: Primary, and Add email address. Add your additional email address(es), save, and then choose the best one to select as your Primary address. 

To make these additions/adjustments from the mobile app:

  1. Download the Linkedin App for your mobile device, if you have not already, and log in.
  2. Select “Me” from the bottom right of your screen to go to your profile.
  3. Select the gear in the upper right corner to access your settings.
